About these Images

Rural areas are traditionally seen as countryside, where population density is low, with most people living on farms or in villages, and an economy based predominantly on farming. Whilst this traditional viewpoint can still be supported, many rural areas are experiencing considerable change. Villages have often lost many of their shops and services, as car-based inhabitants travel to the nearest town or out of town shopping centre. Technological innovation in farming has reduced the need for labour. Hence many who now live in rural areas are no longer dependent upon the traditional rural economy. Some villages may look nice, but are struggling to maintain an identity, as commuters or second-home owners seek to purchase property, inflating prices significantly. Look closely the next time you visit a rural village, all may not be quite as it seems. For instance, is the church still a church, the school still a school and the shop still a shop?
