About these Images

Transport has developed rapidly in recent decades, with air travel allowing rapid global movement, large bulk carrying ships allowing factories to locate many thousands of kilometres from their market, and the motor car encouraging mass movement with resultant congestion and pollution on a scale never seen before. As the demand for mobility increases, public transport will require much more investment and co-ordination. In London, a road congestion charge has been introduced to encourage people out of their private cars and onto public transport, yet on a Saturday afternoon when thousands of people are trying to utilise the trains to return home from their capital, railway managers provide them with inadequate rolling stock and short 4 carriage trains, whilst the longer 8 and 12 carriage trains sit empty in the sidings! Worldwide, our sprawling cities desperately require clean, well-managed and reliable public transport systems, if people are to be tempted off the roads.
